Nguyen Phuong Nga
Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations
29 May 2014, Madam Nguyen Phuong Nga was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations by
President Truong Tan Sang. She officially took office on 5 November 2014 having
presented her letter of credentials to the UN Secretary-General.
Nga served as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam from 2011-2014 – the
first ever woman to hold this position. Prior to this, she was the Spokesperson
of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Director-General of the Ministry’s
Department of Information and Press, having worked at the Department since 1988
and served as its Deputy Director-General since 2003.
to New York is Ambassador Nga’s third posting. She served at the Vietnamese
Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand from 1995-1998, and at the Vietnamese Embassy in
Belgium and Luxembourg and Mission of Viet Nam to the European Union in
Brussels from 2004-2007.
Nguyen Phuong Nga obtained her Master degree at the Moscow State Institute of
International Relations (MGIMO) where she studied from 1982-1987, and got
high-level management training from Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics
and Public Administration. She is a frequent lecturer on international
journalism and media management. In addition to her mother tongue – Vietnamese
– Ambassador Nga speaks English, French and Russian.
is married to Mr. Phung Tat Thang, and has two daughters.
