Vietnam, RoK enhance diplomatic, defence relations

Nhan Dan – Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) convened the third strategic dialogue at the deputy ministerial level on diplomacy, security and defence in Hanoi on May 29.

Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ho Xuan Son of Vietnam and Cho Tae Yong of the RoK, discussed specific measures to deepen the Vietnam-RoK strategic co-operative partnership.

The Vietnamese representative affirmed that Vietnam would improve the investment environment and create favourable conditions for RoK investors, while RoK Deputy Minister stated that RoK investors in Vietnam appreciated swift measures taken by the Vietnamese Government to address recent riots caused by opportunists in Binh Duong and Ha Tinh provinces during public protest against China’s encroachment.

Son briefed his counterpart about tense developments in the East Sea resulted from China’s illegal placement of the Haiyang Shiyou-981 within Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone, violating the country’s sovereignty, sovereignty rights and jurisdiction.

Yong expressed his support to peaceful means to resolve the disputes in accordance with international law, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC).

The two sides agreed to coordinate at regional and international forums, including the United Nation, the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), ASEAN+ and the East Asia Summit.

After hearing RoK presentation on its stance on the Korea Peninsula situation, the RoK- Democratic People’s Republic of Korea relationship and related matters, the Vietnamese representative affirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of supporting peace, stability and denuclearisation on the peninsula while being ready to contribute to boosting peaceful dialogue, to build up trust and improve inter-Korean relations.

On this occasion, Cho Tea Yong paid courtesy visits to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh and Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for External Relations, Nguyen Huy Tang.
