ANSWERS QUESTION ON FEBRUARY 18, 2008
Question: Please provide Vietnam’s comments on Kosovo’s declaration of independence on February 17?
Answers:
Vietnam always closely follows the developments relating to the situation in Kosovo. Vietnam expects parties concerned will hold dialogues and negotiations to settle their differences in order to reach a comprehensive solution to the Kosovo issue, ensuring legitimate benefits of peoples concerned for long-lasting peace in Europe and the world at large, in compliance with fundamental principles of international laws and the UN Charter, including the principle of respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Viet Nam supports a solution to the issue of Kosovo in accordance with Resolution 1244 adopted by the UNSC on June 10, 1999 with the consent of the parties concerned. Resolution 1244 demands a political solution to the Kosovo crisis should include a genuine self-government in Kosovo and take into full consideration of principles on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (i.e. the current Republic of Serbia) and other countries in the region.
Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence did not comply with the UNSC Resolution No. 1244, aggravating the tense situation in Kosovo and the Balkan region.
Vietnam calls upon the parties concerned to exercise restraint and with the contribution of the international community, including the UN continues to strive for a comprehensive and durable political solution, meeting the common aspiration of the peoples of the Balkan region and the international community./.
