ANSWERS QUESTION ON 24 DECEMBER 2008
Question: Could you please advise us on Vietnam’s response to China’s announcement to send warships to the waters off the coast of Somalia to fight pirates?
We share the international community’s concern over piracy at sea off the coast of Somalia, especially when these armed piracy attacks keep going and seriously threaten ships passing through this region.
Vietnam supports efforts of the international community to fully implement the UN Security Council’s Resolutions on combating piracy in the waters off the coast of Somalia. These efforts should be taken in compliance with the fundamental principles of international law, particularly the principle of respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, and the provisions of the UN Charter and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea./.
