Press release on the 3rd ASEAN - UNITED NATIONS Summit

The 3rd ASEAN-United Nations Summit took place today in Ha Noi on 29 October and was chaired by H.E Nguyen Tan Dung, Prime Minister of Viet Nam with the participations of Leaders of ASEAN countries and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
As a significant year to both ASEAN and UN, 2010 marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the UN, 10th anniversary of the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and 10th anniversary of the ASEAN-UN Summit. The Leaders noted with satisfaction positive developments of the ASEAN-UN relationship over the year, with the fine outcome of realizing the Memorandum of Understanding on ASEAN-UN Cooperation, especially the effective cooperation to assist Myanmar overcome the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.
The Leaders welcomed the elevation of the ASEAN-UN relations to Special Partnership which lay a firm foundation and important framework for enhanced cooperation between two sides, as well as paving the way for ASEAN to contribute actively to the realisation of the goals set forth by the UN for peace, security and development.
ASEAN highly appreciated the positive support and assistance from the UN and its sectoral bodies in the past years to ASEANâ€™s community building and regional integration efforts. ASEAN Leaders looked forwards to continued support from the UN to help ASEAN effectively implement the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan and the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community, realizing the UNâ€™s MDGs, and building capacity for addressing global challenges, particularly on energy security, climate change and infectious diseasesâ€¦.
The two sides agreed to effectively realise the Framework for Joint Action 2011-2012 and tasked the ASEAN Secretariat and UN Secretariat to explore concrete measures for implementation. ASEAN and the UN shall also maintain regular dialogue mechanism on the sideline of the annual meeting of UN General Assembly.
Besides, the Leaders spent their time on exchanging their views on regional and international issues of common interest.
