STATEMENT by H.E. Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam at the informal meeting of the plenary with the Secretary-General-designate
10-20-2016, 12:58 pm

Mr. President,

My delegation associates itself with the statement delivered by the distinguished representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on behalf of Non-Aligned Movement and the distinguished representative of Lao PDR on behalf of ASEAN.

Mr. President,

On behalf of the Government of Viet Nam, I extend our warmest congratulations to Mr. Antonio Guterres on his appointment as the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations. I also take this opportunity to extend our most sincere thanks to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for his endeavor, dedication and valuable contributions to the United Nations over the past decade.

Mr. President,

The adoption by acclamation of the resolution A/RES/71/4 reflects the overwhelming support of Member States for Mr. Antonio Guterres as well as the confidence that the membership has in Mr. Guterres, for his integrity, determination, vision, leadership and extensive experience of decades of public service.

There is also equally high expectation that the Secretary-General - designate will provide an invaluable compass to navigate the UN to meet the new global challenges, to address climate change, to conquer the ongoing threats of wars and conflicts, terrorism and violent extremism.

We hope that as the world’s top diplomat, Mr. Guterres will be the pioneer in upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law, in assisting the Member States in their efforts to solve all disputes by peaceful means to ensure global and regional peace, stability and security.

Equally important, Viet Nam hopes that Mr. Guterres will work to mobilize resources and partnerships for the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda and to continue with efforts to strengthen the United Nations and make the Organization fit for purpose.

I conclude, Mr. President, by wishing Mr. Guterres the best of success in his new responsibility. Mr. Guterres can always count on Viet Nam’s full support and cooperation.

I thank you, Mr. President.
