Viet Nam supports UN efforts in Georgia
01-29-2008, 12:35 pm

New York (VNA) - Viet Nam supports the efforts of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) towards ensuring security, strengthening the monitoring capabilities of the two sides, promoting reconciliation and providing rehabilitation and reconstruction assistance.

The statement was made by Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council, at the Consultations on the report of the Secretary-General on the situation in Abkhazia , Georgia , in New York on January 29.

In spite of the absence of any major incident between the Georgian Army and the Abkhaz and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) forces, tension remained in the region, Minh said, adding that in the zone of conflict, the acts of disinformation, while hindering the process of confidence building, contribute to strengthening the atmosphere already unfavorable for official political dialogue aimed at finding a solution to the conflict.

The Vietnamese diplomat suggested that the UNOMIG should take special measures to maintain close contacts with both Georgian and Abkhaz sides, cooperate with the CIS peacekeeping force and, by its presence in the area, to contribute to conditions conducive to the safe and orderly return of refugees and IDPs.

“The United Nations and the Group of Friends of the Secretary-General should make best use of existing mechanisms, including Coordinators, Quadripartite Meetings, Ah Hoc High-Level Group on Security Questions, and Joint Fact-Finding Group, with a view to bringing about concrete steps by the two sides towards a negotiated solution to the conflict,” he added.

Viet Nam urges concerned parties to implement Security Council resolution 1781 (2007) to exercise restraint, refrain from making such provocative statements and take confidence-building measures with a view to easing the tensionand comply with previous agreements regarding ceasefire and non-use of violence, Minh said.
